Why is child support important?

| Jul 1, 2020 | Child Support |

Raising a child is expensive. In addition to the basic expenses such as food, clothing and shelter, there are numerous other expenses that need to be considered. The state of Virginia recognizes that in most circumstances child support is critical, and both parents are responsible for financially supporting their children regardless of who the children live with.

Medical care is an important consideration. Which parent will provide medical insurance and who will pay the out-of-pocket expenses for medical care and medicines needs to be considered. What if the child needs braces? Additionally, depending upon the age of the child, child care expenses may also be a concern. Which parent will be responsible for paying these expenses?

In addition to the obvious financial concerns, there are also numerous others. For example, school supplies, clubs and after-school activities can add up. Many children like to participate in band, cheer leading, football or other sports activities. These activities provide a variety of opportunities for children; however, it can be costly for them to participate in. Child support can be necessary to make these things possible.

The state of Virginia looks at the income of both parents when determining child support. How much does each parent earn and what can each reasonably afford to contribute to allow the child to still maintain his or her lifestyle, if possible. Additionally, any other financial needs that may affect the child will need to be considered. Child support is just one way in which parents provide for and care for their children.
